Overview

Based in the Department of Teaching & Learning, the Bachelor of Science in educational studies degree program assists students in obtaining credentials for teaching in elementary, secondary or all-level (early childhood through grade 12) settings. All B.S. in educational studies majors must double major in order to complete their content courses.

Successful graduates are recommended to take the Texas State Board for Educator Certification exams, passing scores on which enable them to pursue credentials for teaching careers in the private and public sectors, graduate work in the social sciences, and informal education paths in nonprofit organizations.

The educational studies major prepares students to pursue teaching careers in the private and public sectors, graduate work in the social sciences, and informal education paths in nonprofit organizations. 

Getting a B.S. in educational studies has many benefits, especially for students who pursue a career outside of the traditional classroom. This degree gives you more career versatility, foundational skills in leadership and instructional strategies, and opportunities for further study. 

Participation in the educational studies major does not guarantee a teaching position. The prospective student must also apply for and fulfill all entrance requirements in order to be admitted into the Teacher Preparation Program, which provide the hands-on experience teaching in  the classroom either as a student teacher or an intern.

Historically, a has a liberal arts focus, provides more flexibility in course selection and emphasizes a teaching approach focused on the social and emotional well-being of students. A has a more career and professional focus, with an emphasis on field experience and application of skills in Simmons’ degrees. 

Obtaining a B.S. in educational studies can prepare you for in the nonprofit sector, work as a curriculum designer, academic advisor, career counselor and more. Trained teachers tend to be very organized and come with excellent presentation and speaking skills, which translate to a variety of industries.

 

No. Most graduates of the B.S. in educational studies program have not completed the required student teaching or internship necessary to be recommended to take the Texas State Board for Educator Certification exams. If these students want to teach, they must either complete their field classes (student teaching or internship) through the Teacher Preparation Program or the M.Ed. with Teacher Preparation Program

Yes. Students who pursue the Bachelor of Science in educational studies . They must complete both the Bachelor of Science in educational studies and another degree major.

Undergraduate students pursuing an approved academic major in Dedman College, Cox School of Business, Lyle School of Engineering or Meadows School of the Arts – or the applied physiology and sport management major in the Simmons School – may also pursue a major in educational studies from the Simmons School. Music education students complete the Education Preparation Program requirements within the Simmons School.
