The Master of Bilingual Education program is for preservice and in-service Spanish/English bilingual educators who have a near-native or native command of Spanish and English. M.B.E. courses integrate the language and culture of students in the Spanish-speaking world, particularly students of Hispanic heritage living in the United States.

As part of the Department of Teaching & Learning, successful graduates are prepared to work as expert bilingual teachers, bilingual coaches or leaders of bilingual programs in their schools or districts.

The required courses in methodology, linguistics, culture, research, and the history and rationale of bilingual education offer maximum flexibility to those who are interested in broadening both their academic preparation and classroom skills.

There are many career paths you can take with a master’s in bilingual education, including:

The educator focuses on teaching content in both languages, such as geography, history, math, etc. While English is used as one language of instruction, students are not specifically taught English language lessons. By incorporating both the use of English and the students’ native language equally, their English language skills will continue to develop and strengthen. 

ESL programs help students who have limited English proficiency to learn English. The teacher addresses the class only in English. The coursework in the program focuses on teaching the four language skills: reading, writing, speaking and listening.

With the number of English learners in U.S. public schools reaching 5.1 million in 2023, the demand for specialists in this . According to , of the roughly 12% of teachers who are linguistically diverse, many are not trained or credentialed to provide the academic instruction in non-English languages. Therefore, many states experience persistent shortages of bilingual teachers, and Dual Language Immersion administrators around the country regularly identify the limited supply of bilingual educators as the key obstacle to growing their programs.

While our incorporate various areas of interest, we also offer non-degree and certification-preparation programs that are designed to satisfy the State Board for Educator Certification requirements for teachers who promote scholarship and best practices in particular educational areas or serve discrete audiences such as gifted children or children for whom English is not the native language. 

The additional training prepares teachers for the respective certification exams; all SBEC certifications require that a candidate pass a state test. These advanced credentials are attached to the standard teaching certificate, so as a prerequisite to earning a graduate certification, a candidate must hold a bachelor’s degree and the initial teaching certificate.
