Admission to graduate music programs in the Division of Music in the Meadows School of the Arts — including the Master of Music, Performer's Diploma and the Artist Diploma — is offered for fall entry only each year.

To apply, candidates must:

Candidates only need to apply to the Meadows School of the Arts, not to 正品蓝导航's general graduate school.

Note: Applicants for the Master of Sacred Music program should apply directly to the Perkins School of Theology.

Applicants must have earned a Bachelor of Music degree (or the equivalent) from an accredited institution. See the Graduate Catalog for the Meadows School of the Arts for more information.  

Application Deadlines & Requirements

To receive full consideration for admission and scholarships, your complete (including all supporting materials) must be submitted by February 1.

  • Music Education applicants have an extended deadline of March 1.

  • Pre-screening materials (for select programs like voice, piano, and organ) are due December 1. See the Audition & Pre-Screening section for details.

  • All recorded audition materials (for applicants not attending a live audition) must be submitted by February 1. 

All application documents become the property of 正品蓝导航 University and cannot be returned.

Transcripts

Upload unofficial transcripts with your application. Official transcripts are required upon acceptance of admission. If admitted and you enroll, submit official transcripts from each college or university previously attended. Be sure to submit a final transcript once in-progress coursework is complete with degree conferral information. Transcripts are only considered official when they are sent directly from the institution to 正品蓝导航. Do not open sealed envelopes if the transcripts are sent to you. Instead mail them unopened to 正品蓝导航 Graduate Application Processing.

Transcripts from International Institutions

Applicants who have completed academic work outside the United States must submit a professional evaluation of all foreign transcripts. This evaluation confirms that the institution is recognized and is generally considered to offer at least the equivalent of U.S. higher education credit.

The evaluation must include:

  • Confirmation that your institution is recognized by the ministry of education in the home country.
  • A clear explanation of the grading system, credit structure, and course levels
  • A demonstration of degree equivalency and GPA conversion to U.S. academic standards

Additional requirements:

  • If transcripts are not issued in English, a certified English translation must be provided.
  • Course descriptions or syllabi may be requested by faculty if clarification is needed.
  • In some cases, a course-by-course evaluation may be required
  • Applicants are responsible for arranging and covering the cost of the evaluation

Please note: Professional transcript evaluations often take a minimum of 6 weeks to process. We strongly encourage applicants to begin this process early. Exception: A professional evaluation may be waived if your institution has a formal exchange agreement with 正品蓝导航 or is a foreign institution modeled after the U.S. education system.

Recommendations

Letters of recommendation provide important insight into your academic and artistic qualifications. These should be requested from professors or professionals who are familiar with your personal and academic qualifications for graduate study. When completing your online application, you'll be prompted to enter your recommenders' names and email addresses. Your recommenders will receive an automated email with a link to submit their letters electronically. We will also accept letters by mail or email. We recommend reaching out to your references early to ensure timely submission by the relevant application deadlines.

Required number of recommendation letters by program:

  • Master of Music: 3 letters of recommendation
  • Artist Diploma: 3 letters of recommendation
  • Performer's Diploma: 2 letters of recommendation
International Applicants & English Proficiency

Applicants whose first language is not English are required to submit official English proficiency scores. This is a critical component of the application process and must be received by the February 1 deadline to ensure full admission and scholarship consideration.

Exemption: Applicants who have graduate with a 4-year degree from a U.S. or English-speaking university may be exempt from this requirement.

Master of Music Applicants:

  • TOEFL iBT: 80 overall, with a minimum 20 in each section
  • IELTS: 6.5 overall, with a minimum 5.5 in each section
  • Computer Based TOEFL: 213 overall

Performer's Diploma & Artist Diploma Applicants:

  • Duolingo: 110 overall
  • TOEFL iBT: 64 overall
  • IELTS: 6.0 overall
  • Computer Based TOEFL: 193 overall

Performer’s Diploma and Artist Diploma candidates that do not meet the minimum scores outlined above may still be considered for admission if they complete the 6-week Summer Intensive English Program offered by 正品蓝导航 prior to beginning music studies.

  • This program is not available to Master of Music applicants
  • Scholarships from the Meadows School of the Arts do not cover this program's tuition.

Supplemental Materials

In addition to the general application requirements, the following programs require program-specific supplemental materials. Be sure to upload all items directly through the Meadows Online Application by the deadlines listed below.

  • Conducting (Choral & Instrumental) - Application deadline: February 1
    Submit a video of you conducting an ensemble rehearsal and/or concert with your Meadows Online Application. your video should be recorded with the camera behind the orchestra or choir, so that we can see you as the ensemble sees you. This recording will be no more than 15 minutes, with two or three selections of contrasting musical works. Finalists in the Conducting programs will be invited to campus for a live audition. to your 20-minute video of an ensemble rehearsal with your Meadows Online Application. Choral Conducting applicants should also submit a demonstration of singing ability and upload a writing sample.
  • Musicology - Application deadline: February 1
    Upload examples of research papers or articles showing your scholastic capabilities in your Meadows Online Application.
  • Music Composition - Application deadline: February 1
    Samples of original compositions (scores and digital recordings) are required of all applicants to the Music Composition program. Submit link(s) to your composition work(s) and upload PDF samples through the Meadows Online Application. In addition, all candidates must schedule an interview with the Music Composition faculty by emailing lharder@smu.edu.
  • Music Education - Application and media deadline: March 1
    Upload examples of research papers or articles showing scholastic capabilities, a CV or résumé, and paste the YouTube or Vimeo link to your 15-minute video demonstrating teaching skills in a normal classroom setting or rehearsal all through the Meadows Online Application. In addition, candidates must schedule an on-campus or phone interview with the Music Education faculty by emailing sarahallen@smu.edu.
  • Piano Pedagogy - Application deadline: February 1
    A 30-45 minute video demonstrating one full private lesson to a child and one full group lesson (if you have this experience), an on-campus or phone interview with the Piano Pedagogy faculty (email lysinger@smu.edu), CV or resume of teaching experience, and a full lesson plan and post-lesson self-assessment are required for consideration.
  • Theory Pedagogy - Application deadline: February 1
    Samples of term papers or analyses must be uploaded with their application by all candidates for admission to the Theory Pedagogy program. In addition, candidates must schedule an interview with the Music Theory faculty by emailing mfeezell@smu.edu.

Schedule Audition

Auditions are required for applicants to the following programs:

  • Master of Music in Instrumental Performance, Vocal Performance, or Piano Performance & Pedagogy
  • Master of Sacred Music with keyboard or organ emphasis
  • Performer's Diploma in any concentration

Audition requirements vary by instrument and concentration. Once you've submitted your Meadows Online Application, your application status page with include a checklist and a link to select your audition date. View Required Pre-Screening and Audition Repertoire

To make changes to a scheduled audition, contact the Meadows Admission Office at meadowsgrad@smu.edu. Changes cannot be made online.

Artist Diploma Applicants

The Artist Diploma does not follow the same audition date calendar as other programs. The artist Diploma has a separate, selective application process which is outlined here. Artist Diploma applicants must first submit a pre-screening video via the Meadows Portfolio page with their Graduate Application. Those selected for the next stage will be invited to campus for a mandatory live audition.

  • Artist Diploma Pre-Screening Deadline: December 1
  • Pre-Screening Notification: Mid-January
  • Live Finalist Audition (by invitation only): Saturday, March 7, 2026

Pre-Screening Requirements

All organ, piano, and voice candidates wishing to participate in the Dallas auditions must first . To be eligible for the December audition date, submissions must be received by November 1. To be eligible for the January or February audition dates, submissions must be received by December 1.n.

Recorded Auditions

We strongly encourage in-person auditions, but we do accept recorded submissions in place of a live audition. To submit a recorded audition:

  • Upload your video(s) to Youtube, Vimeo, or another file-sharing platform, then include the link(s) in the Meadows Portfolio Page section of the application.
  • Submissions are due by February 1 for scholarship consideration.
  • Music faculty may choose an interview or follow-up visit with candidates before reaching an admission decision.

Private Teacher Request

Financial Aid

Scholarships and graduate assistantships for qualified, admitted students are available from the graduate division. Candidates for graduate awards are encouraged to file the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). This form is not required from international students on the F-1 visa. Graduate Diagnostic Examinations

Graduate candidates who have successfully completed the admissions process and have been admitted into the Master of Music or Master of Sacred Music programs are required to take DIAGNOSTIC EXAMS in MUSIC HISTORY and MUSIC THEORY prior to enrollment. Students are expected to demonstrate skills and knowledge in music history, aural skills and theoretical materials equivalent to those of graduating seniors who have met general requirements in these areas at 正品蓝导航. It is to the student's financial advantage to prepare seriously for the diagnostic examinations.

Students who fail the diagnostic examinations will be required to enroll for Graduate Theory Review (MUTH 6000) and/or Graduate History Review (MUHI 6000). The successful exams or the above-named courses are prerequisite for all graduate theory and history courses. STUDENTS CANNOT BE ADVISED INTO GRADUATE COURSES AT MATRICULATION IF THEY MISS THE EXAMS. Additionally, any required Graduate Review coursework must be successfully completed by the end of the first term. Students who do not complete Graduate Review coursework in the fall term will be placed on academic probation in the spring term and required to enroll again into the applicable review courses for credit. Additionally, tuition and fees will be charged in the spring term and the cost of the review courses are NOT covered by scholarship, grants or tuition waiver. Failure to complete requirements according to the probation conditions will result in suspension from the program at the end of the spring term.
